My journey toward founding a publishing company began as a mere concept during my junior year of college. At that stage, it wasn’t yet a fully developed idea—just a passing thought. I was working a work-study job as a student assistant on campus, but the position provided minimal income and wasn’t particularly fulfilling. Since childhood, I had known that working for someone else long-term was not my aspiration. However, I didn’t have the time to sit down and map out my future after college, so the idea of starting a publishing company remained in the back of my mind.
In 2020, I began my master’s program. While the publishing company idea was still just a fleeting notion, I wanted to explore other employment opportunities. However, my job search proved more challenging than I had anticipated—especially in California, where competition was intense and prospects for recent graduates like me were surprisingly limited, even with an MFA.
It wasn’t until 2022, during a family trip to Greece, that inspiration finally struck, motivating me to start my company. We stayed with a family friend in a small, cozy flat in Athens. One morning over breakfast, our host asked if I was familiar with Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP). I realized that I was—and that I had a wealth of knowledge to share. At that moment, the wheels began to turn.
Exploring Athens was an incredible experience—I absolutely loved it. The food, the people, the architecture, the art, the history, and, of course, the thousands of cats made it unforgettable!
The final spark that motivated me to move forward with creating my company came from discovering a beautiful Greek word: Gata.
In Greek, gata means "cat," and as you can imagine, I used this word constantly while exploring. Cats were everywhere—so many gatas! I don’t think they minded. 😆
When my family and I returned home from Greece, I immediately got to work on building my company. And now, here I am—with my own business, surrounded by my beloved fur babies, sipping tea in the mornings, and writing my books!
Thank you for reading. ❤️
